Heartbreak and Bliss…

I have to admit, I have been feeling a bit of despair recently.

My dream is for a world alive with vision, and everywhere I look, I see a lack of it; in politics, business, education, healthcare; my list could go on. It’s not that I am just now becoming aware of the issues of the world; I have always kept current on the news, but for some reason, it has been affecting me more deeply lately.

I knew that something was up for me, some kind of message was trying to get through, so in my meditation time this morning, I asked “What is this all about? Why am I feeling this way?” Then, some words that I had written for my book came to me: Continue reading Heartbreak and Bliss…

A new story…

I recently discovered a story.  Perhaps, more accurately, the story discovered me.  It is a story about what can happen when we try to use old tools to solve new problems.   It is a story of reconciliation and forgiveness.  It is a story about vision, purpose, and service.  Above all else, it is a story about the need for a new kind of leadership based on the power of collective wisdom; and the need for a new kind of leader who has been initiated into the gifts of their soul.  It is the story of Raven Hawk, and it is time for it to be told. It’s the time of year when we celebrate the light.

As the days grow shorter and the nights darker we see lights everywhere.  We see them twinkling on trees in our homes, outlining our houses and buildings, and shining from menorahs.  Since the earliest days of human history, we have celebrated with lights.  Ever wondered why that is?

Yes, I know that there are all kinds of stories from various traditions that tell us why we burn candles, put up Christmas trees, and light menorahs; but why is it that there is this cross-cultural, inter-faith fascination with light during the time of year when we have the least of it in the Northern Hemisphere?

In the Gospel of St. John, we read: “And the same light shines in darkness, and the darkness does not overcome it.”  In the Jewish tradition, there is the miracle of the unending supply of oil for the lamp.   Pagans honor the time of the sun standing still with the solstice. Everywhere we turn this time of year, we see light shining in the darkness.

Deep down inside us all, no matter what spiritual or faith tradition we follow, we all know that there is a light that can outshine any darkness.  No matter how dark our days or cold our nights, we understand that there is a power that will see us through.

Without the darkness, we would never be able to see the light.  Without knowing lost, we would never know found.

So, this holiday season, I invite you to bear witness to the light.  See it in those around you – your loved ones and strangers alike.  But mostly, I invite you to see it in yourself.  You are the light that shines in the darkness, the supply that never ends, and the power of the sun standing still.

Happy Holidays.

One day you finally knew…

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting their bad advice.

I have been away from this blog for too long.  I have let the details of the days get in the way. Days have passed, one detail arises where another was finished, and before long, I have not done one of the things that feeds my soul the most:  writing.

It is not that I haven’t been busy on important projects, because I have.  Since my last entry, I have completed the editing process for my book, Live a Mythic Life – a hero’s journey to vision, purpose and service; I have spent time in Colorado with my good friends and colleges Mike Bodkin and Deb Siverson working on the vision for our retreat program, The Quest for Authentic Leadership; and I have been teaching classes and leading retreats.  But my blogging has suffered.

I suspect that this is not a foreign idea to many reading these words.  Many of us suffer from falling into the pattern of putting off that which we truly love to do while we tend to the many things in our lives that we think we have to do.  But in the process, what happens to the essential parts of us?  What happens to the gift we were born to bring into the world?  If we don’t do the one unique and particular thing we were born to do, then who will?

As the summer winds down, the days become shorter, and the nights a bit cooler, our bodies long to turn inward as the Earth in the northern hemisphere does so as well.  Take the time to refocus on doing those things that truly serve your soul – those things that, when you are doing them, you lose all track of time and that bring you a sense of deep and abiding joy.  Then, let me know about them.  I love to hear the stories of others journeying along with me on this mythic path.  Many Blessings.

Changes…

I have been thinking about something this morning:  Why is it that so many of us, and I include myself in this group, seem to have such a fear of change?  I’m talking about changing the little things, like what kind of breakfast cereal we eat; and the bigger things, like our country’s healthcare system.  This isn’t going to be a political commentary, it’s just that the healthcare debate is so much in the news right now, it’s hard to avoid.  Continue reading Changes…
